Submissions

We welcome unsolicited submissions. Our criteria for publication are best gauged by a close reading of the magazine. We focus mainly on fiction, memoir and reportage, with a bias towards the interesting and unusual.

We do not publish:

  • Academic essays
  • Book reviews

We only publish original material, i.e. first-ever publication. We cannot run a piece which has already appeared on the web or elsewhere in print. We can, however, publish an original translation if the work has previously appeared in another language.

We have no set maximum length for submissions. Most of our submissions are between 3,000-6,000 words. There is no minimum length.

Please do not send more than one piece, or three poems, at one time. You can, if you wish, send illustrations for your submission.

Submissions should be made by post only. Email submissions are not accepted.

We do not return submissions, so please do not include postal coupons or stamped addressed envelopes. We respond by email, so make sure that you send a current email address, as well as your postal address, with the submission.

Please also send a cover letter, stating where your work has been published before, if relevant.

You may submit pieces for the website too. Please state that the submission is specifically for the website. We may also recommend that a submission for the print magazine runs on the website instead. The maximum length for website submissions is 4,000 words.

Please do not send book manuscripts.

Please note that we are not in a position to comment on your work. We receive a significant number of submissions every day, many of which may be unsuitable for Granta, however well written.

We aim to respond to submissions within a month of receipt.

Photographic submissions to Granta

Granta includes at least one photo essay in each issue, as well as individual photographs to accompany the written pieces. We welcome all kinds of photographic work, in colour or black and white, but for the essay we favour work that lends itself to being published sequentially, either as a series of photographs on the same theme, or as a series that tells a story or reports on a social or political situation somewhere in the world. We do not restrict ourselves to traditional photojournalism, or to purely photographic work, but would consider, for some issues, paintings, drawings, film and video stills and graphics.

In submitting pictures, a short note on the idea behind the pictures is helpful. Captions are helpful where appropriate.

In the first instance it is best to email your idea to photosubs@granta.com, including not more than six low-res jpegs as examples of the kind of work you do. This may be followed by a request for more images and, eventually, full-resolution images on a CD.

We do, on occasion, commission sets of pictures. Proposals for commissions should be very detailed, and the cost of travel and processing should be given at the outset.

Please do not send any prints by post. If you prefer to send images on paper, send laser copies or even photocopies first. As long as they give a good sense of the final project, they will serve as working images.
