Videos of the Dead

In this one you see only the lower extremities of the protagonist. The brand of tennis shoe is known as the Chuck Taylor. Her blue jeans are tapered. There’s a small expanse of pink sock. The shot that we have here is silent but for the murmuring from the next room – partygoers. If my interpretation is correct, these murmurings concern a chandelier and whether one portion of this fixture is intentionally lopsided. Meanwhile, on a linoleum floor, before floral wallpaper, the feet, once parallel, splay themselves into a classic V-shape. And then they are parallel, anew, facing oppositely. One sneakered foot balances on its toe, as if the protagonist of the video intends to pursue ballet. In the room adjacent, a voice audibly remarks, ‘Is he just shooting feet?’ ‘Yep, he’s just shooting feet.’

Mirth follows.

The feet appear heedless of aesthetic controversies raging in the next room. And yet perhaps they are not heedless. They attempt a few tentative dance steps – foxtrot, cha-cha – each with a certain earnestness. After which, they come to a halt. Becoming again: sneakers – and metatarsals, toenails, warts, bunions.

As with all the materials in our collection, the subject died not long after the filming of this document.
