What was so special about Wichita Falls that all of its 1,154 hotel beds were occupied?
I tried the last name on my list of cheapo accommodation, the Trade Winds Motel on Broad Street. Full up. The clerk said I could always try the Sheraton. It sounded expensive, but I was getting desperate. Night had fallen. In the time it had taken for me to stroll in and out of the Trade Winds' lobby, the blazing sun had disappeared, and black night had swept in across the parking lot. And still I had nowhere to lay my head.
The Sheraton's reception area was bigger than my entire house back in Scotland. A few minutes' trek over the marble and shag, and I reached the desk.
