When Mia Erdmann passed away last May, ecocriticism lost a singular voice and all of us who were changed and then changed again by her two books lost the chance to see where she might push the field next. She published her first book, Hitched to Everything: Literature and the Unseen World, in 1989 at the age of thirty-two. I can still recall my first exposure to those accusing opening words:
