Nell Freudenberger was born in New York in 1975 and currently lives with her husband in Manhattan. Her collection of stories, 'Lucky Girls', and her novel, 'The Dissident', are published by Ecco Press in the US and by Picador in the UK. She has won the PEN/Malamud Award for Short Fiction and a Whiting Writers' Award. She first appeared in this magazine with 'The Tutor' in Granta 82.The story 'Where East Meets West' is meant for her grandmother, Martha Clapp Freudenberger, who died in 2005 at the age of ninety-seven and was a Latin teacher, as well as a passionate collector of silverware and passport stamps.
