From Kazuo Ishiguro to Bill Buford
Kazuo Ishiguro, soon-to-be one of Granta’s Best Young British Novelists, wrote this letter to editor Bill Buford in 1981, when the magazine, recently relaunched, was enjoying an instant reputation:
It reads:
Dear Bill Buford,
Since running into your gregarious person last February, I’ve been meaning to end my futile search amongst barren bookshops and newsagents for a copy of GRANTA by writing to you. This morning I found two pound notes lying in the street. Here they are. Will you send me your issue about the death of the English novel?
all the best,
(Ish)
Kazuo Ishiguro
