This is fine piece of writing: fluid, pliant and hauntingly tender. But it does not qualify to be described as an essay. It is rather memoir-like in nature. An essay usually expresses some personal opinion (of the essayist) on its subject-matter. I can't see that this piece does. Perhaps it marks a shift from the traditional form of the essay as we know it.
