The Fall of the Berlin Wall
November 9, 2009 was the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Granta 42: ‘Krauts’ (1992) explored the newly unified Germany’s shifting self, and the seismic impact the event had on Europe and the world. Granta 42 was driven by one ‘simple question’: ‘What is the new Germany?’ Essays by Martha Gellhorn, Ian Buruma, Günter Grass, Hans Magnus Enzensberger and others reveal that the answer to this ‘simple question’ is not so simple at all.
For the first time online, subscribers to Granta.com can now read Ian Buruma’s essay, ‘Buchenwald’, and Martha Gellhorn’s provocative ‘Ohne Mich: Why I Shall Never Return to Germany’, which maps the intersection between the personal and the political.
