Kwani? Litfest (KLF) 2008
Nairobi/Lamu, Kenya
August 1–15

‘Kenya has never been more relevant to global development than today. For the best writers on the continent to gather in a setting that embodies Africa’s greatest hopes and deepest fears is an extraordinary opportunity.’
– Binyavanga Wainaina, founding editor of Kwani?

Organized by Kwani? magazine, this Litfest promises a celebration of African stories with literary workshops, book launches, dinners and symposiums. After the horrific post-election chaos in Kenya, it will also be a timely opportunity to investigate the role of the written word in conflict situations.

Participating Granta writers include Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Binyavanga Wainaina.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s second novel, Half of a Yellow Sun, won the 2007 Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction. She has written frequently for Granta, most recently a piece of memoir, ‘Operation’, and a short story, ‘On Monday Last Week’.

Binyavanga Wainaina is the founding editor of the literary magazine Kwani? and won the Caine Prize for African Writing in 2002. He first appeared in the magazine with ‘How to Write About Africa’ in Granta 92, and is currently writing a piece for Granta 103 about what it means to be Kenyan after the ravages of ethnic cleansing.
