  1. Like a true Brazilian, everything I have to say is: Then it is ok!
Excellent post! And yes, that's nothing but reality. But you forgot to mention that we we are serial kissers, kissing everybody hello and goodbye. So, beijinhos! =)

  3. Really enjoyed this piece--beautiful music, wonderfully captured. Two of my favorite Brazilian musicians as well: Marisa Monte and Maria Bethania!

  4. "...history suggests that Hemingway copped his style from the writers who came up in The Pulps: James M. Cain, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and my personal favorite, Jim Thompson."

Two minutes of Googling suggests that Cain didn't publish his first novel until 1934, after Hemingway was already a literary heavyweight. Both Chandler and Thompson got going even later, in the '40s.

    Who's factchecking?

  5. Dans le sourire.

    Dans le
    sourire d'une
    fleur je vois
    l'éternité, le
    son de la
    neige et encore
    l'harmonie qui
    chante le
    matin....

  6. nice description of Penang Hawker Foods :) i'm a Penangnite and now still residing in Penang, reading this still make my mouth watery and stomach feel hungry ahaha.

By the way, using the ferry is one of the popular way of coming into the island, but coming in via the Penang Bridge is also a spectacular view of the island :). After all it's the longest bridge in Malaysia... which only currently passed by the 2nd Penang Bridge which is currently under construction

  7. Sweetness.

    In the sound
    of a shadow
    full of happiness,
    near a lonesome
    desire calling
    the present
    and a delicate
    thought.

  9. I would really like to know how to listen to this. There are no instructions, and no way I can see to start it.

  10. An extraordinary rich description that catches all the senses, and the heart. The shouts and cries of the market, the smell and colours of the food, the hiss as it fries, the skill.

And drumming into the mind, an omen. The advancing age of these people, the inevitable loss of skill and livelihood, cuisine and accord.

As a way of life is marvellous captured in words before it dies, we sense with sadness, that huge global chain with massive logo and insatiable appetite, lurks hungry in the wings. Having already devoured the young of these people, it is ready to carve up and greedily swallow the carcass of the whole culture depicted here.

But at least, thanks to this writer, we have secured these words.

  11. Made me want to rush out and order a blanquette de veau with a croute au fromage to begin.

  12. Barthes / A Lover's Discourse / Dark Glasses

  13. Patrick, that was a haunting story, if only because of how closely it mirrors my experience. I was diagnosed with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy at age 18 after two grand mal seizures. At the time I was a student pilot with 40 hours under my belt--my career path, as you can imagine, has since changed.

Because you mentioned having auras I wanted to suggest a trick I discovered early on that gives me some peace-of-mind. I typically know at least an hour beforehand that I'm going to have a seizure, so I asked my first neurologist if there was a medication I could take at that moment to prevent it from happening, and she prescribed me a few doses of lorazepam (but many similar medications would work.) Now I carry them with me on my keychain and have a few stashed around the house, just in case. As I asked my doctor, if I know a seizure is coming, how is my condition served by allowing it to happen and losing my ability to drive for half a year?

Which brings me to the second discovery I made, also early in my treatment: most neurologists have all the bedside manners of a spider.

    Best of luck to you,

    Adam

  14. I find it ironical that the person who issued the fatwa sentencing Salman Rushdie to death, passed away not long after issuing the fatwa.

  15. Absolutely brilliant and sublime Anushka. You have narrated it in such a simple way yet with a thudering impact. You deserve it by all means. I read it thrice!

  16. Persuasiva rima.

    Así, en el
    canto de una
    mágica rima,
    en el sol
    que regresa
    como el nuevo
    pájaro en un
    llanto perpetuo....

    Francesco Sinibaldi

  17. Brigid Collin's magnificent input into this powerful and moving collaboration is not done justice by the design of this on-line publication.

Please, please enlarge the illustrations that inspired this writing to a comprehendible size that can be appreciated alongside the writing, or add an option to enlarge?

  18. Le chemin des poésies.

    Une rime
    éphémère quand
    le chant du
    matin dessine
    le sourire
    des chansons
    désolées.

    Francesco Sinibaldi

  19. I am a great fan of the monologue style and this one is a cracker. The break in the middle when we are told he is not sure if he shouted or he doesn't recall anymore is well placed.
A slice of life at its most hectic and I feel for the guy.

  20. I know this may be efficient, but I find it eerie and scary. A kind of complete study in alienation - all the individuals do not relate at all - 'ships passing in the night' would make a good title!

The sad thing is that this would seem to suggest that touch, talking, and personal support do not necessarily lead to the best results in these circumstances - that machinery and distance are more reliable and thorough!

I wonder - what about the holistic effects of trust, personal attention, and reassurance, on healing and survival?

  21. The glad sun.

    With a
    certain delight
    a magical
    sound returns
    in the place
    where your
    memory
    outshines....

  23. This is fine piece of writing: fluid, pliant and hauntingly tender. But it does not qualify to be described as an essay. It is rather memoir-like in nature. An essay usually expresses some personal opinion (of the essayist) on its subject-matter. I can't see that this piece does. Perhaps it marks a shift from the traditional form of the essay as we know it.

  24. I love this piece. It absolutely captures the essence of the people without stereotyping them as is our wont in Nigeria.
It also points out the need for greater emphasis/advocay on mental health issues in Nigeria.
If Medical professionals hold such beliefs as your young "corper" doctor, what is the average Nigerians view on depression?
