Edwidge Danticat's 'The Revenant'

|

The recent earthquake in Haiti destroyed the house that writer Edwidge Danticat grew up in, and claimed the life of her cousin Maxo. She was interviewed shortly after the disaster by Democracy Now!, and has written a tribute to her cousin in the New Yorker.

Edwidge Danticat’s delicate and haunting story ‘The Revenant’ is set in Haiti immediately after the death of a child. You can read it in our archive here for free.

The story first appeared in Granta’s first ‘Best of Young American Novelists’ issue. Published in 1996, this was the first American instalment in this highly successful series, which includes three editions of ‘Best of Young British Novelists’ (1983, 1993, 2003), and a further ‘Best of Young American Novelists’ in 2007. You can buy any of these previously published issues of the magazine in our back catalogue. This autumn will see the first ‘Best of Young Spanish Language Novelists’, showcasing the best of new Spanish and Latin American fiction, in Granta 113.

    Je chante une pensée.

    Quand le
    souffle du soleil
    revient dans
    l'école, je chante
    une triste
    harmonie; et
    quand la naturelle
    neige invente
    l'atmosphère
    d'une pensée
    perpétuelle,
    j'attends le matin...
