Granta Gets US Editor
Granta magazine is delighted to announce the appointment of renowned critic John Freeman as its American Editor. Freeman, former president of the National Book Critics Circle, will help to ensure that Granta retains its unique place in contemporary literary life, and its reputation as the best place to publish the most exciting new writing. Working closely with Granta’s headquarters in London, he will develop an ambitious programme of author events and provide a vital connection between the magazine, US-based writers and Granta’s North American and Canadian readership. He will be based in New York.
Sigrid Rausing, publisher of Granta, said: ‘Granta has a long American history that we want to build on. John is a voracious reader and a prolific critic. He also has an indefatigable and entrepreneurial imagination, which will be great for Granta. We are enormously pleased that he has decided to join us.’
John Freeman added: ‘I have always admired Granta’s engagement with the world and with American writing, and I am thrilled to be joining the magazine. In particular, I look forward to taking the conversations that develop on its pages to a wider public through a programme of author events, as well as our newly reinvigorated website.’
John Freeman will join Granta at the beginning of 2009 and report to its editor, Alex Clark.
