May 16 sees the publication of A Series of Disappointments, the new book from photographer and Granta contributor Stephen Gill.

Gill has been photographing discarded betting slips in the borough of Hackney, east London. His black-and-white images show hope transformed into loss and defeat, and question the growth of the betting industry in a borough that contains some of London’s most deprived areas.

His photographic essays have previously appeared in Granta 81: ‘Best of Young British Novelists’ and Granta 65: ‘London’.
